What Is HBOT? (hyperbaric oxygen therapy)
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the inhalation of 100%
medical grade oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. This is the equivalent of breathing 100% oxygen underwater from depths of 16.5 feet or more.
The benefits of oxygen supersaturation have become accepted by much of the international community for a wide range of conditions. The oxygen levels in the blood are increased up to 200%, and in the rest of the body, substantially more. The increase in oxygen helps to heal wounds, fight infections, reduce swelling and remove toxins from the body. As atmospheric pressure increases, so does the concentration levels of the oxygen.
Life Force has a multiplace chamber. We are able to treat up to 5 patients at a time. One of our trained staff members will be inside the chamber during treatments.
Once the patients are seated inside the chamber, the chamber is slowly compressed to a prescribed treatment depth. This process is monitored and done slowly, so as to ensure that no ear discomfort occurs. Patients are able to speak freely to others, read a book, watch cable television or a DVD.
A typical course of treatments consist of 40 dive sessions, going 5 days a week for 8 weeks. Treatment sessions last about one hour and 20 minutes.
Observed Results
- Feeling more relaxed/calmer, able to sit still
- Improvement in vision, regaining sight, better/faster tracking ability sentences; increased understanding
- Decrease in spasticity of muscles
- Improved sleeping
- Trying a variety of new things/ foods/ activities
- Improved interactions with family and friends
- Clearer thinking; increased ability to concentrate
- Increase in strength; improved trunk and neck control
Mechanism of Action
Hyperoxygenation (increased oxygen supply)
provides immediate support to poorly perfused tissue in areas of compromised blood flow. The plasma, lymph and cerebrospinal fluids experience a 10-15 fold increase in oxygen concentration.
Antimicrobial effect (killing of anaerobic and pathogenic bacteria)
Proliferation of fibroblasts (responsible for the production and repair of tissue and collagen)
Hyperactivity of leukocytes (janitor cells) These cells are responsible for removing dead cell debris.
Vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) The benefit of vasoconstriction is a reduction of posttraumatic edema (swelling). HBOT safely reduces cerebral edema which permits excess fluid around the brain cells to drain away and keep cell wastes from building up to toxic levels.
Angioneogenesis (growth of new micro blood vessles) provides increased flow of oxygen and nutrients as new micro-blood vessles are established.
Increased circulation of adult stem cells 2 hours of HBOT at 2 ATA (33 feet) doubles the patients circulating stem cells. 40-60 consecutive daily treatments at 1.5 ATA (16.5 feet) for 1 hour, increases circulating stem cells by 8 fold (800%) Thom et al.
